It is no surprise that failure on the part of Congress to reform the immigration laws has resulted in a record number of bills and resolutions being passed by the various States. LEADERS ORGANIZE TO PERSUADE CONGRESS TO ENACT IMMIGRATION REFORM

The Immigration debate continues as leaders from the Center for American Progress, NAACP, AFL-CIO, the National Council of La Raza, agriculture industry, and other groups gathered on June 3, 2009 to begin a national campaign for reform of the immigration laws. DHS: Relief for Widows of U.S. Citizens

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today granted deferred action for two years to widows and widowers of U.S. citizens—as well as their unmarried children under 21 years old—who reside in the United States and who were married for less than two years prior to their spouse’s death. When is Amnesty not Amnesty?

The debate has started once again. Congress is holding hearings on what may eventually be a breakthrough in the immigration stalemate. That is, if the economy does not derail the latest attempt to deal with undocumented workers.

The concern on the part of some is that allowing legalization of people who entered the United States illegally, or remained in the United States illegally, after entering with a visa, is unfair to those who have been waiting in line for years.  In effect, amnesty penalizes those who have tried to do things the right way.

USCIS recently released the following new Fact Sheet concerning its policy and procedure for members of the U.S. military to become U.S. citizens.

Qualifying military service is generally in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and certain components of the National Guard and the Selected Reserve of the Ready Reserve. Supreme Court Limits Penalty For Using False Social Security Numbers

This week the US Supreme Court limited the government’s ability to prosecute and deport workers in this country illegally. While the use of false documents can result in being jailed, the court ruled a charge of the more serious crime of “aggravated identity theft” cannot be made without proof that they knew the identification number belonged to someone else. Haitian TPS Update

UPDATE:  Since TPS was denied by the Bush administration, Haitian advocates are pressing President Obama to take action and grant TPS to Haitians. The Miami Herald recently reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton commented on the burden deported Haitians would be to Haiti at this time, and the help that remittances provide to Haitians.


Currently, there are about 30,000 Haitians facing deportation, but if TPS is granted, Haitians in the United States would receive work permits and be able to live temporarily in the United States. Read the rest of this entry »
