STATES TAKE THE INITIATIVE IN IMMIGRATION REFORM
It is no surprise that failure on the part of Congress to reform the immigration laws has resulted in a record number of bills and resolutions being passed by the various States. LEADERS ORGANIZE TO PERSUADE CONGRESS TO ENACT IMMIGRATION REFORM
The Immigration debate continues as leaders from the Center for American Progress, NAACP, AFL-CIO, the National Council of La Raza, agriculture industry, and other groups gathered on June 3, 2009 to begin a national campaign for reform of the immigration laws. U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano today granted deferred action for two years to widows and widowers of U.S. citizens—as well as their unmarried children under 21 years old—who reside in the United States and who were married for less than two years prior to their spouse’s death. Coming up with a comprehensive immigration reform bill that serves our national security and economic interests and without giving away too much amnesty, remains a major issue of contention.
