Update on Immigration Reform

LEADERS ORGANIZE TO PERSUADE CONGRESS TO ENACT IMMIGRATION REFORM

The Immigration debate continues as leaders from the Center for American Progress, NAACP, AFL-CIO, the National Council of La Raza, agriculture industry, and other groups gathered on June 3, 2009 to begin a national campaign for reform of the immigration laws. More than 700 advocates from over 35 states are participating in meetings, town halls, training and lobbying visits to encourage Congress to act.

The question, of course, is whether in this time of economic downturn Congress will have the ability to reach a consensus. John Podesta, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress said, “we need solutions that restore the rule of law while aiding our economy by making taxpayers of all immigrants. So, to those opponents of reform we say this – immigration reform and economic recovery are not at odds with each other, but go hand in hand.”

If you think of anything I left out of this post, please feel free to put that on the comment.
