Haitian TPS Finally a Reality

Haiti Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Designation Announced Yesterday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that she was designating Haiti  for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a move that will make many Haitian nationals  eligible for U.S. immigration benefits. Eligible Haitian nationals who were in the United States as of January 12, 2010 will be  able to apply for protection and authorization to work. Haitian TPS Update

UPDATE:  Since TPS was denied by the Bush administration, Haitian advocates are pressing President Obama to take action and grant TPS to Haitians. The Miami Herald recently reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton commented on the burden deported Haitians would be to Haiti at this time, and the help that remittances provide to Haitians. Currently, there are about 30,000 Haitians facing deportation, but if TPS is granted, Haitians in the United States would receive work permits and be able to live temporarily in the United States.
