Former President Clinton Named US Envoy to Haiti

 

It was recently announced that former President Clinton was named US envoy to Haiti. It is no secret that Haiti needs help. The latest Country Condition Report from the US State Department shows that the following human rights problems were reported: failure to hold timely parliamentary elections; alleged unlawful killings by HNP (police) officers; ineffective measures to address killings by members of gangs and other armed groups; HNP participation in kidnappings; overcrowding and poor sanitation in prisons; arbitrary threats and arrests; prolonged pretrial detention; an inefficient judiciary subject to significant influence by the executive and legislative branches; severe corruption in all branches of government; violence and societal discrimination against women; child abuse, internal trafficking of children, and child domestic labor; and ineffective enforcement of worker rights. When is Amnesty not Amnesty?

 

The debate has started once again. Congress is holding hearings on what may eventually be a breakthrough in the immigration stalemate. That is, if the economy does not derail the latest attempt to deal with undocumented workers.

The concern on the part of some is that allowing legalization of people who entered the United States illegally, or remained in the United States illegally, after entering with a visa, is unfair to those who have been waiting in line for years.  In effect, amnesty penalizes those who have tried to do things the right way.

Supreme Court Limits Penalty For Using False Social Security Numbers

 

This week the US Supreme Court limited the government’s ability to prosecute and deport workers in this country illegally. While the use of false documents can result in being jailed, the court ruled a charge of the more serious crime of “aggravated identity theft” cannot be made without proof that they knew the identification number belonged to someone else.
